DOLPHINS PAY TRIBUTE TO ICON
Redcliffe rename junior playing fields for Dick "Tosser" Turner
THE Redcliffe Dolphins have paid tribute to one of their greatest club men by renaming their junior playing fields the Dick “Tosser” Turner fields.
A crowd of about 100 people — including Queensland rugby league greats Wally Lewis and Gene Miles — attended the official naming ceremony on Saturday at the fields at Talobilla Park.
Members of the Turner family, widow Jan and son Richard, were there to see the renamed complex officially opened.
Club president Des Webb attended the morning and said it was a great way for the club to express their gratitude to the rugby league icon.
“The unveiling of the new signs at the two junior field entry points on Saturday morning was a fantastic opportunity for the Dolphins to show their gratitude to the great man who gave over 50 years of dedication to his ‘mighty Dolphins’,” Mr Webb said.
“The morning was a sombre one. Several in attendance shed their tears in memory of their great friend ‘Tosser’.”
Turner was the first person to coach a Dolphins junior team in the Brisbane Rugby League in 1958.
He was the club president for 17 years and a tireless ambassador for rugby league on the Peninsula.
